Jazz is a globalized music, featuring the voices of musicians with different musical and sociocultural backgrounds as well as different national, ethnic and gender identities - yet, canonical jazz histories have often been limited to U. S.-centered narratives focusing on a few male instrumentalists. In contrast, this collection of papers originating at the 12th International Jazz Research Conference in Graz reflects on the plurality of different historical and contemporary jazz voices and makes them visible from different research perspectives. Topics range from historical exchanges between jazz and Portuguese fado music to the struggles of Austrian vocal jazz graduates in the marketplace and the difficulties faced by female jazz musicians trying to make their voices heard in a patriarchical jazz world. This volume further reflects on current academic trends in jazz research, discussing the possibilities of artistic research in jazz and formulating the need for jazz studies to deal with issues concerning popular music.
